Its role Owner
Carbon TerraVault Holdings, LLC (CTV) is a carbon management subsidiary of California Resources Corporation (CRC), a publicly traded independent energy company. It develops and operates carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects that capture CO2 from industrial sources, transport it via pipelines, and permanently sequester it in depleted underground oil and gas reservoirs using EPA Class VI injection wells.
CTV's main activities center on CCS and direct air capture plus storage (DAC+S) technologies, leveraging existing oilfield infrastructure in California. Key projects include CTV I at the Elk Hills Field in Kern County, which achieved California's first CO2 injection in 2026 into the 26R reservoir, with additional sites such as CTV II through VII and others across the state including the Sacramento Basin.
The company operates exclusively in the United States, primarily California, with a portfolio of storage sites offering over 350 million metric tons of potential capacity. It has formed the Carbon TerraVault Joint Venture (CTV JV) with Brookfield, in which CRC holds 51% and Brookfield 49%, to develop infrastructure and storage assets.
Positioned as a leader in California's emerging CCS sector, CTV supports state decarbonization and carbon neutrality objectives by providing commercial-scale carbon management services to industrial and power partners while repurposing legacy energy assets for climate solutions.
