Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited (BCGCL) is an Indian joint venture company developing the country’s first commercial coal-to-ammonium nitrate complex in Lakhanpur, Odisha.
Established in May 2024 with Coal India Limited holding 51% equity and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited holding 49%, BCGCL utilizes indigenous pressurized fluidized bed gasification technology to convert domestic coal into synthesis gas for producing approximately 0.66 million tonnes per annum of ammonium nitrate.
The project supports India’s National Coal Gasification Mission, aims to reduce import dependence on chemicals, enhance energy security, and promote self-reliance under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
