Banco de Ahorro y Crédito ADOPEM, S.A., operating as Banco Adopem, is a private-sector microfinance institution headquartered in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. It specializes in savings and credit services targeted at micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MIPYMEs), with particular emphasis on financial inclusion for underserved populations, including women who comprise approximately 67% of its client base.
The bank provides microloans, savings accounts, housing and agricultural credits, educational financing, and other products designed to support productive activities in commerce, industry, and services. It maintains a nationwide network of branches and sub-agents, enabling broad access across urban and rural areas of the country.
Its origins trace to the 1982 founding of the Asociación Dominicana para el Desarrollo de la Mujer (ADOPEM) as an NGO focused on women's economic empowerment through microcredit. The entity was restructured as a development bank in 1985 and transformed into its current savings-and-credit form in 2004. Since 2012, Fundación Microfinanzas BBVA, a Spanish non-profit, has held the majority stake of around 71%, supporting operational enhancements and expansion.
Positioned as a leading player among Dominican savings-and-credit banks and one of the larger private institutions by assets and reach, Banco Adopem contributes to economic development, poverty reduction, and sustainable growth. It has recently partnered with the European Investment Bank on financing for sargassum management projects benefiting local micro-businesses.
