About Arctial

Arctial is a Finland-based project company established by Rio Tinto, Mitsubishi Corporation, Vargas, and Finnish Industry Investment Ltd (Tesi) to evaluate and potentially develop a low‑carbon primary aluminum plant in Kokkola’s Kruunuportti industrial area. The initiative focuses on electrified, low‑emission aluminum production in line with Finnish regulatory requirements.

The company is conducting a feasibility phase covering technical design, power supply, permitting, environmental and social impacts, and logistics. It is working with Fortum on electricity sourcing and hedging, and has a Letter of Intent with transmission system operator Fingrid for a main grid connection. A final investment decision is expected around 2026–2027, with the project intended to leverage Kokkola’s established industrial infrastructure and access to renewable power.
