American Railcar Industries, Inc. (American Railcar) is a North American rail equipment company historically known for designing and manufacturing freight railcars—particularly tank cars and covered hopper cars—used to transport chemicals, petroleum products, and other bulk commodities. The company’s activities have included production of railcar components and the provision of maintenance, repair, and fleet support services for shippers and railcar owners serving the chemical, energy, and agricultural sectors.
Headquartered in the St. Louis, Missouri area, American Railcar was long affiliated with Icahn Enterprises. In 2019, affiliates of ITE Management acquired the company and subsequently sold its manufacturing business to The Greenbrier Companies. American Railcar’s former leasing affiliate had been sold separately to SMBC Rail prior to that transaction. The brand’s designs and manufacturing legacy remain influential in North American tank and covered hopper railcar fleets used across the chemical supply chain.
