Agora Think Tanks gGmbH is the non-profit legal entity behind Agora Industry, a Berlin-based think tank founded in 2021 as an extension of Agora Energiewende. Part of the Agora Think Tanks family—alongside Agora Energiewende, Agora Agriculture, and in collaboration with Agora Verkehrswende—Agora Industry develops science-based, politically feasible strategies for achieving climate-neutral heavy industry.
Its work targets emissions-intensive sectors responsible for nearly two-thirds of industrial CO₂, including steel, cement, and chemicals. Key focus areas encompass low-carbon technologies like electrification of industrial heat, carbon capture and storage (CCUS), clinker substitution in cement, circular economy measures, and renewable feedstocks to replace fossil inputs in chemical production. Publications such as "Chemicals in Transition" outline pathways via direct electrification, recycling, and biomass utilization, while tools like the Cement Transformation Cost Calculator support decarbonization analysis.
Funded by grants from private foundations (about 80%) and public institutions (20%), Agora Industry maintains independence without corporate funding or commissioned research. It engages stakeholders including policymakers, industry, and civil society, contributing to EU dialogues on industrial transitions, such as cement sector decarbonization.
