Its role Owner
AESC, operating as AESC Japan Co., Ltd. in its home market, is a leading manufacturer of high-performance lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
Founded in 2007 as Automotive Energy Supply Corporation through a joint venture involving Nissan and NEC, the company pioneered commercial EV battery production with the Nissan Leaf. Following Envision Group's acquisition of a controlling stake in 2018, it became majority-owned by the Chinese renewable energy firm while Nissan maintains a minority position. The company rebranded elements back to AESC names in 2023 to emphasize its heritage.
Headquartered in Yokohama, Japan, AESC maintains production facilities in Japan, the United States—including plants in Smyrna, Tennessee; Florence, South Carolina; and Bowling Green, Kentucky—Europe, and China. It develops and manufactures advanced battery cells and packs, supplying OEMs such as Nissan, Honda, BMW, Renault, and Mercedes-Benz, as well as energy storage integrators. Some U.S. operations have shifted toward LFP chemistry for stationary applications.
With thousands of employees globally and a focus on sustainable technologies, AESC plays a significant role in the battery supply chain for the automotive and renewable energy sectors, supporting the global shift to electrification and grid stability.
