American Cleaning Institute (ACI) is a U.S.-based trade association representing the cleaning products value chain, including manufacturers of household, industrial, and institutional cleaners as well as suppliers of chemical ingredients, packaging, and fragrances. Formerly known as the Soap and Detergent Association, ACI serves companies involved in the formulation and supply of surfactants, enzymes, solvents, and other cleaning chemistry components.
ACI focuses on science-based product stewardship, ingredient safety assessment, environmental and human health risk evaluation, sustainability metrics, and supply chain best practices. It provides technical guidance, data resources, and education for industry stakeholders, and engages with regulators and standard-setting bodies on matters such as chemical management, labeling, and ingredient transparency.
The organization also facilitates industry collaboration through research initiatives and events, helping align formulators and upstream chemical producers on safety, performance, and sustainability priorities across the cleaning chemistry sector.
