Its role Owner
6K Energy is the battery materials division of 6K Inc., a U.S.-based advanced materials company founded in 2014 and headquartered in North Andover, Massachusetts. It specializes in the sustainable production of cathode active materials (CAM) for lithium-ion batteries, primarily using its proprietary UniMelt microwave-plasma technology. This continuous, closed-loop process produces materials such as NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) and LFP (lithium iron phosphate) chemistries, along with others like LLZO, LMO, LTO, and LNMO, in significantly less time and with lower environmental impact than traditional co-precipitation methods.
The division operates a Battery Center of Excellence in North Andover for development and qualification, and is constructing the flagship PlusCAM facility in Jackson, Tennessee—a 160,000 sq ft plant with planned capacity of 13,000 metric tons per annum of multi-chemistry CAM. The Jackson plant, supported by a $50 million U.S. Department of Energy grant, is designed to deliver IRA-compliant materials with zero hazardous waste, up to 90% less water use, and substantially reduced carbon emissions and costs. 6K Energy focuses on domestic supply chains for electric vehicles, grid storage, defense applications, and AI infrastructure, leveraging recycled and U.S.-sourced feedstock.
As part of 6K Inc., which also operates the 6K Additive division for metal powders, 6K Energy positions itself as a key player in onshoring battery material production to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers. It has secured partnerships including supply agreements with defense contractors like CRG Defense and collaborations with recycling firms such as Cirba Solutions. The company emphasizes compliance with U.S. policy incentives and aims to provide cost-competitive, high-performance materials for the growing North American battery industry.
