BASF, Essity, and TU Wien Transform Diaper Waste into Raw Materials

Key highlights
  • BASF, Essity, and TU Wien developed a gasification pilot project for recycling diaper waste.
  • The process converts waste into carbon monoxide and hydrogen for chemical production.
  • Gasification occurs at temperatures above 600 °C, sanitizing and converting waste into feedstock.
  • The solution aims to reduce municipal waste and enhance circularity in chemical and hygiene sectors.

Project Overview

BASF, Essity, and the Technical University of Wien have collaborated on a pioneering gasification pilot project to recycle absorbent hygiene products, such as used diapers, into valuable raw materials for chemical production.

Gasification Process

The innovative gasification technology developed by BASF and TU Wien converts solid waste into a gas mixture containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen at temperatures above 600 °C. This process sanitizes the waste and transforms it into high-quality feedstock, comparable to virgin resources.

Environmental Impact

This breakthrough addresses a significant waste stream and offers a scalable solution for enhancing circularity in the chemical and hygiene sectors. It has the potential to reshape municipal waste management and support sustainability goals.
