MadoquaPower2X Commits to Expanding New Land for Green Hydrogen and Ammonia Production in Sines, Portugal

At a glance

The MadoquaPower2X consortium, led by Madoqua Renewables, has expanded its commitment to Portugal by acquiring additional land for green hydrogen and ammonia production in ZILS. The project aims to reduce CO2 emissions, promote sustainable economic growth, and create jobs. Recognized as part of the "Hydrogen Valley" initiative, the project will produce significant amounts of green energy, contributing to European energy autonomy. Collaboration with aicep Global Parques and other stakeholders is crucial for the project's success. MP2X plans to drive investments in the hydrogen production value chain, while also promoting territorial cohesion through the implementation of renewable energy farms across Portugal.

Lisbon – MadoquaPower2X (MP2X), a Portuguese, Danish, and Dutch international consortium led by the company Madoqua Renewables, renews its ongoing commitment to Portugal by signing deeds for the surface right to an additional 60 hectares of industrial land for the green hydrogen and ammonia production units in ZILS - Sines Industrial and Logistics Zone.

The MP2X project, a world leader in green hydrogen and ammonia in Portugal, has already achieved several important milestones in its development that position it as a highly mature project, duly recognized by the National authorities, since its public presentation on April 22, 2022.

Based on Portugal's high potential for wind and solar energy, MP2X will promote the circular value chain, lower CO2 emissions, reduce dependence on fossil fuels, namely by reducing natural gas imports and significantly potentiating the fulfillment of national and European objectives presented in the national (PNEC 2030) and European (REPowerEU) strategies for decarbonizing the economy and in the national Hydrogen strategy (EN-H2). The production of these green energy vectors, an activity classified as "sustainable" according to the latest European Union taxonomy, will generate sustainable economic growth for Portugal.

For the CEO of aicep Global Parques, Isabel Caldeira Cardoso, this new step demonstrates the importance of ZILS and Portugal in the necessary energy transition and in meeting decarbonization goals. The Madoqua Power2X consortium project is extremely relevant in the development of a renewable energy community and proves, with this act, its maturity and its commitment to sustainable economic development. The entire aicep Global Parques team has been very actively involved in the various stages that a project of this dimension necessarily has to go through.

Strategic Vision for Investment and Job Creation

This strategic vision for investment prioritizes the creation of 265 highly qualified permanent jobs and 6,000 indirect jobs established through local partnerships and with academia starting from 2025. The project of national interest allows Portugal to be a pioneer in implementing this type of project, and MP2X was officially recognized, on May 10, 2023, as part of the "Hydrogen Valley" initiative led by the European Commission through the Mission Innovation and Clean Hydrogen Partnership.

The Non-Executive Director of MadoquaPower2X, Marloes Ras, emphasizes the importance of collaboration throughout the entire value chain. "To deliver on energy transition ambitions, we need to collaborate, develop partnerships, and include all stakeholders in our journey. With the signing of the surface right deeds for the land with aicep Global Parques (ZILS), MP2X demonstrates its continued dedication to our mission of decarbonization. Together with ZILS and aicep Global Parques, we have taken an important step forward for our project, realizing the potential of Sines as a European Hydrogen Valley, reinforcing the strategic importance of Portugal as a pioneer and leader in energy transition."

Project Phases and Green Energy Production

The initial project will utilize 560 MVA to produce 50,000 tons of hydrogen and 300,000 tons of green ammonia annually using renewable electric energy. In the second phase, the project will utilize a 1400 MVA electrical connection to produce a total of 150,000 tons of hydrogen and over 1 million tons of green ammonia annually.

Just the first phase of the project corresponds to 20% of the Portuguese targets within the context of European green hydrogen production, and it's based on an ambitious eight-year Strategic Plan. MP2X is essential to contribute to European autonomy in terms of energy and food (fertilizers) value chains through the consumption and production of hydrogen and commercialization of Green Ammonia.

Driving Investments and Territorial Cohesion

MP2X is and will continue to be a direct driver for other investments in the hydrogen production value chain in Sines, fostering technical and commercial partnerships to purchase hydrogen produced by third parties. MP2X plans the construction and operation of self-consumption solar and wind farms that will produce the renewable energy dedicated to the industrial unit in Sines. These farms will be implemented in inland, decentralized, and dispersed areas throughout Portuguese territory. Therefore, this project will also contribute to greater territorial balance and cohesion.
